What A “Nut”tritious Challenge!

On Friday, November 16, 2012, the University of Florida IFAS – Holmes County Extension Office officially ended the Holmes County Peanut Butter Challenge with a total of 65 pounds of peanut butter!  Niki Crawson, Holmes County 4-H Agent, and Judy Corbus, Holmes County FCS Agent, packed up the nutritious donation and delivered it to HCMA Ministry Center & Thrift Store located in Bonifay on Hwy 90 W, to help local families in need.

BES 1st Grade classrooms were a large part of the collection drive this year!  Special thanks to all 1st grade students and their teachers for supporting this project.  Mrs. Taylor’s class held the title of most jars collected and will be celebrating their community support win with a pizza party!

On behalf of the University of Florida IFAS – Holmes County Extension, thank you to all the local citizens who participated in the peanut butter drive to support local families in need and local peanut producers!

The University of Florida – IFAS Extension Offices in the Panhandle are collecting jars of peanut butter to give to their own local food pantries.  Holmes County is doing their part in this “nut”ritious challenge by asking all residents to get involved as well.  The Holmes County Extension Office is partnering with other local farm supporters in encouraging residents to support their community by simply bringing jars of peanut butter (unopened) to one of the following designated locations from now until November 16th:

Holmes County Extension Office

1169 E Highway 90

Bonifay, FL

USDA Farm Service Agency  – Holmes County

103 N. Oklahoma Street

Bonifay, FL

Holmes County Farm Bureau

1108 North Waukesha Street

Bonifay, FL

Peanuts are plentiful in Holmes County and the surrounding counties in the Florida Panhandle.  In fact, just one acre of peanuts will produce 30,000 peanut butter sandwiches!  Yummy!  Peanut butter is a great source of protein.  Two tablespoons of peanut butter provide more than 10% of the daily recommended value and 200 calories.  It is easy to store and easy for adults and children of all ages to make as a meal.

Help us help our community support our local peanut farmers AND provide healthy, nutritious and YUMMY peanut butter to our families!  Bring in your jars of peanut butter today!  All peanut butter will be donated to a local food pantry in Holmes County during Farm-City Week.
